Dog Brothers Martial Arts
The name Dog Brothers comes from the concept of humans as tame animals,
as dogs are tame wolves, humans also have an animalistic side that is "tamed" by
our society. The name also gives an impression of a slightly more rough
and ready application of the art leaving aside some of the more esoteric
parts of martial arts. This, the idea and philosophy of the Dog Brothers,
is explained in greater detail in Tao
of the Dog written by Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny.
The keystone of Dog Brothers Martial Arts practice is "Real Contact
Stick fighting". This usually takes place at events called "Gatherings",
and is a no-holds-barred sparring match wearing minimal protective gear
(fencing mask and protective gloves). The normal weapons used in these
matches are single or paired sticks. The idea of these fights is to be
as realistic as possible without going to the extreme of the Death Matches
that were sometimes held in the Philippines. Individuals are responsible
for their own actions in these fights and a common "rule" is
to "remain friends at the end of the day"; serious injuries
are rare at these events. Although not all practitioners take part in
this, techniques are tried and tested in this arena to ensure that they "work".
Dog Brothers training uses aliveness in its practice to enhance the
use of the principles in dynamic situations. This is done by using varying
degrees of resistance and reaction to give the feeling of using the art
on non-compliant opponents. The techniques or principles themselves are
derived mainly from the Filipino Martial Arts, but also include elements
of Krabi Krabong and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts).
